Viral Video Captures a Heroic Neighbor Fending Off a Bear that Comes Within Feet of a Boy

Black Bear Sighting in Canada

The next YouTube video posted at the top of this blog post takes us to Canada. This video went viral after it was posted online. The YouTube page Inside Edition caught wind of it and shared it on their channel with over 22 billion views across all their videos. The Inside Edition team shares a description of the events that took place in Canada in this video below.

“Heartstopping video captures the moment a 7-year-old comes face to face with a black bear while riding a scooter near his home in Canada. The video shows the bear heading right towards the boy in broad daylight. Without panicking, Huxley stares the animal down until the bear stops dead in its tracks. Out of nowhere, Huxley’s neighbor appears with his arms raised high. The neighbor relentlessly pursues the bear from behind the car until the animal finally scurries away.” 

Heroic Man Saves Boy From Black Bear

At the start of this video posted at the top, we see a small boy who is out riding his scooter around the neighborhood. This little boy probably assumed he might come across another neighborhood boy to play with, perhaps a stray dog or cat that he might pet along the way. But seeing a massive black bear coming straight toward him was probably not on his list of things to see playing around the neighborhood.

As this boy is playing around, suddenly, the black bear crosses the small street and walks straight up to this boy. Seemingly paralyzed with fear, we see that the boy doesn’t even move an inch. Which, honestly, is probably why this boy was able to get by unscathed.

Abruptly, at 25 seconds, we see a man come out and boldly approach the bear, opening his arms out wide. The bear takes one look and hightails it out of there. You might be wondering why this man held his arms open wide like that, and it is because he was appearing to make himself look larger than he was. Which is exactly what you do when approached by a bear, according to the New Jersey government site. “Make yourself look as big as possible by waving your arms.” So, this begs the question, what exactly should you do if approached by a bear?

What To Do if You’re Approached by a Bear?

Two of the best examples of what to do when you’re approached by a bear took place in the video above. The boy remaining calm allowed the bear to see this boy would not harm him. He didn’t try to run, which may have spooked the bear into harming the boy.

The second example of the man making himself larger also scared the bear, and he was able to leave quickly. 

According to the U.S. National Parks Service, “Remain still; stand your ground but slowly wave your arms. Help the bear recognize you as a human. It may come closer or stand on its hind legs to get a better look or smell. A standing bear is usually curious, not threatening.” 

It looks like this young boy and this man were well versed on what to do if approached by a bear, and it saved both their lives.
